About this artwork

This bronze half‑length figure by Richard Browne depicts Dame Alicia Markova, a celebrated ballet dancer. Notice her poised pose and the subtle line work that hints at graceful movement. The sculpture measures about 28 inches tall and 17 inches wide—small enough to observe fine detail up close but large enough for the viewer’s eye to track its contours. It was presented to the National Portrait Gallery by Browne’s widow, Janice, in 1992.
